Last week I shared the passage from Luke, which states, “And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high” (Luke 24:49). These two truths from Yeshua to His disciples must have been so important that He made sure to tell them just before He ascended into heaven.

What is it about these two things that are so important? For one, if Yeshua breathed on them the Holy Spirit (John 20:22), then why tell them to wait, until they receive the promise of the Father? What is this promise? In Isaiah we read, “For I will pour water on the thirsty land and streams on the dry ground. I will pour My Spirit on your offspring, and My blessing on your descendants” (44:3). And, again, Isaiah states, “But a Redeemer will come to Zion and to those in Jacob who turn from transgression. It is a declaration of Adonai. ‘As for Me, this is My covenant with them,’ says Adonai: ‘My Ruach who is on you, and My words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth, or from the mouth of your offspring, or from the mouth of your children’s offspring,’ says Adonai, ‘from now on and forever’” (59:20-21).

We now have a direct connection of the Redeemer of Israel (Yeshua) and the promise for the Spirit—the breath of God—that shall not depart from our mouths, which the disciples were no strangers to. So, the promise of the Father is the promise of the Spirit placed deep within our souls. The promise is our Helper when deeply needed, it is our teacher into all truth (John 14:17; 15:26), and He will not leave us as orphans (John 14:18) but will continuously be with us to Father us and direct us. This promise is also connected to Yeshua’s departure, which can be only connected to the mo’ed (feast) of Shavuot (Pentecost). 

Why is this promise so important? At the giving of the Law in Exodus 20, despite how grand it was and what the Talmud records as tongues of fires flashing above the children of Israel and all the languages of the world being spoken of (70 in all) through the Almighty, the giving of the Spirit in Acts 2 gives all believers in Yeshua hope. Hope that the Promise is for all who are in Messiah, both Jew and non-Jew. Next week we will look at power clothed from on high! You may just learn something new.
